Kona Country Club - Kona Course
[Detail]
Hot
Top Rated
These two courses are very different. The Kona Course is a seaside course and the Alii Course was built on an inland hillside. There are lava areas on both courses, which are played as lateral hazards. Both courses have water hazards in play. The Ocean Course has several holes overlooking the ocean. The tee on hole #13 is near a blow hole. An ancient Hawaiian slide is located between holes #1 and #10 on the Alii Course. The signature hole on the Alii Course is #14, a 171-yard, par 3, requiring a tee shot from an elevated tee over a lake to the green. The fairways on the courses are fairly wide and the greens large and fast. The courses were awarded a three-star rating in 1994 by "Golf Digest." The green fees after noon are the same for everyone. The 5,841-yard men’s tees on the Alii Course also have a ladies' course rating of 74.7 and a slope of 138. The 6,155-yard men's tees on the Kona Course also have a ladies' course rating of 75.9 and a slope of 129.

This resort, which was named to "GOLF Magazine's" 1998 list of "Gold Medal Resorts," features two regulation eighteen hole courses. The Kiele Course is very demanding and requires several shots over ravines. "Golf Digest" rated it the 6th "Best in State" course in 1995-96, and 7th in 1997-98. In addition, "GOLF Magazine" nominated it 64th among the "Top 100 Course You Can Play In The U.S." in 1998. The Lagoons Course is a bit easier and much more forgiving off the tee. Carts are mandatory on the Kiele Course, while golfers may walk the Lagoon Course at designated times.

[Detail]

This course is situated along the shores of the Pacific Ocean with mountains also being visible in the background. The front nine holes are fairly flat and wide open, while the back nine holes feature several elevation changes. Many coconut and pine trees, as well as numerous sand bunkers, are found throughout the course. The greens are undulating and well-protected, making them very challenging. The club hosted the USGA National Public Links Tournament in 1985. Locals consider it one of the best municipal courses in the state. "Golf Digest" ranked it 25th among the "Top 75 Public Courses" in 1990, and 2nd best under the category of "America's Top 75 Affordable Courses" in their list of "America's Best Golf Courses Everyone Can Play" for 1996.

Grove Farm Golf Course
[Detail]

This course offers a great view of the island of Kauai. The first tee is spectacular with the Pacific Ocean on one side and Mount Haupu looming on the other. Volcanic cliffs, massive ravines, giant sinkholes, and lush tropical undergrowth dominate this course. The wonderfully designed course plays around deep ravines and streams that are fed by fresh mountain river rain. This course is unique in that it offers ten holes instead of the traditional nine at most courses. Ownership desired to satisfy the golfer's craving for a spectacular golf game unmatched by another other nine or eighteen hole course. This course was voted one of the top 10 "Best Nine Hole Courses in the Country" by "Sports Illustrated" in 1997. The course ratings are based on ten holes.

This resort was named to "GOLF Magazine's" 1998 list of "Silver Medal Resorts." The front nine is located on the side of a mountain, providing some spectacular views. The back nine is more open than the front nine and not as hilly. The greens are fast and medium-sized, and the fairways vary in width and are tree lined on the front nine. Water hazards come into play on several holes, including #17, a 308-yard, par 4, which calls for an approach shot to an island green. The signature hole is #8, a 444-yard, par 4, offering a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside and a 250-foot drop in elevation from the tee box to the fairway. This hole has a lake and a fairway sand bunker on the right and a hillside on the left side of the fairway. "Golf Digest" rated this course as the 13th "Best in State" course for 1995-96, and 15th in 1997-98. The weather around this course can be totally different from its sister course, the Challenge at Manele. This course is located at about 1,800 feet of elevation and can have fog and rain, while it is sunny at the beach side.

The Challenge at Manele
[Detail]
Hot
Top Rated
High above the roiling surf that crashes into the cliffs of Hulopoe Bay, the magnificent Challenge at Manele beckons golfers from around the world. With its dramatic terrain of plunging gorges and verdant ravines, The Challenge offers a thrilling target-style game amid miles of unspoiled natural surroundings. Every hole offers sweeping ocean views, and several require precision shots from cliff to cliff – using the Pacific itself as a water hazard. Designed by the legendary Jack Nicklaus, The Challenge is a course you will rightly anticipate, and will celebrate long after your round has ended.
The course features 3 holes constructed on the cliffs of Hulopoe Bay which use the Pacific Ocean as a dramatic water hazard. The five-tee concept challenges even the best golfers with precise tee shots over natural gorges and ravines, while the average golfer will enjoy the beautiful vistas without suffering limitations on distance and accuracy. The Par 3, Number 12 "signature hole" plays from a cliff 150 feet above the crashing surf, requiring a demanding 200-yard tee shot across the ocean.

Wailea Gold Course
[Detail]
Hot
Top Rated
The home course of The Senior Skins Game, the Wailea Gold Course is the most challenging of Wailea's trio. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., it has been ranked among the country's best new courses by Golf Magazine and Golf Digest, and one of the world's best designed by the readers of Conde Nast Traveler.
Jones flavored the Gold with elements of classic golf course design, then finished it with a rugged, natural look. Throughout the course are stark lava rock outcroppings, indigenous Hawaiian grasses, an abundance of kiawe (a relative of mesquite), and remnants of papohaku, prehistoric lava rock walls built by early Hawaiians and preserved for their historic value.
The Gold's 200 foot elevation change from top to bottom enhances the numerous ocean and mountain vistas available from virtually every hole. The course has been labeled a "thinking player's" course because it demands strategy and careful club selection to be played well.
